Let's go on a journey - The quest to soothe your nervous system.
There's a lot of strong evidence for the benefits of physical therapy and exercise, and the mechanisms responsible for this are miraculously complex. But to keep things simple, the most important thing you need in physical therapy is someone skilled in managing the interactions of the body's nervous system and musculoskeletal system.
Your nervous system provides the "language" of pain so you can change your behavior. When a part of the body sustains an injury, chemical messengers get sent to the nervous system, which in turn can modulate (turn up or turn down) the physical experience of pain.
Initially, our nerves increase pain sensitivity with an injury. By increasing the intensity of pain for a short duration, we naturally limit the irritating behavior and the body can heal. As the body heals, the nerves will desensitize and usually movements return to being pain-free.
But sometimes they don't. In fact, I can think of dozens of musculoskeletal conditions (many listed below) in which pain relief just feels elusive. Rarely is the underlying medical condition (injuries or degeneration of a joint, ligament, muscle, tendon) an activity prohibitive problem.
In reality, we have to address the nervous system - it's unable to effectively turn off the body's pain program. My job is to help your body 'reset' the pain program. I will help you do this and also teach you how you can do this yourself.
